Arm Lift in Mesa, AZ

Arm lift surgery helps women and men in Mesa reveal the contoured upper arms that diet and exercise alone can’t uncover. Performed by Dr. Jude LaBarbera, a board-certified plastic surgeon, this procedure removes the loose skin left behind by weight loss, aging, or genetics – so you can raise your hand, wave, and wear what you want without a second thought.

What Is Arm Lift
Surgery?

An arm lift – known medically as brachioplasty – is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm, between the underarm and the elbow. When skin loses elasticity, no amount of triceps training can restore it. The result is the hanging, drape-like fullness patients often describe as “wings” or “bat wings.”

Types of Arm Lifts at Our Mesa Practice

Not every patient needs the same extent of surgery. During your consultation, Dr. LaBarbera will discuss which approach matches your degree of laxity.

Mini / Limited-Incision Arm Lift

Suited to patients with limited looseness concentrated near the underarm. The incision is short and hidden within the armpit crease, minimizing visible scarring for those whose skin excess is modest and localized.
The most common approach for moderate to significant laxity. The incision runs along the inner or back surface of the upper arm, extending from the armpit to just above the elbow so skin can be removed along the full length of the arm.
For patients – often after major weight loss – whose loose skin continues past the armpit onto the lateral chest wall and flank. The longer incision addresses that transition zone so there is no leftover fold at the side of the body.

Surgical Markings

On the day of surgery, you will meet with Dr. LaBarbera before entering the operating room. While you are standing, he will carefully mark the areas of excess skin and define the planned incision pattern. These markings serve as a guide throughout surgery and are customized to your anatomy and surgical goals.
Arm lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Your anesthesia is administered and continuously monitored by a licensed anesthesia provider, ensuring you remain comfortable and asleep throughout the procedure. An antibiotic is given before surgery begins.
If your treatment plan includes liposuction, it is performed before the arm lift. Liposuction removes excess fat and helps refine the arm’s shape, creating a smoother contour before loose skin is removed.
Incisions are designed according to the amount and location of excess skin. They may be limited to the armpit for smaller corrections or extend along the inner or back of the arm for more significant skin laxity. When necessary, the incision can continue toward the side of the chest. Every effort is made to position incisions where they are as discreet as possible when your arms are at rest.
The pre-marked excess skin and tissue are removed. Dr. LaBarbera then tightens and secures the deeper supportive tissue layer to create a more defined, long-lasting contour while reducing tension on the skin closure.
After surgery, you will spend approximately one to two hours in the recovery area while the anesthesia wears off. Dr. LaBarbera personally contacts your designated emergency contact after the procedure, and they are typically able to join you about 45 minutes later before you are discharged to continue your recovery at home.

Recovery After Arm Lift

Expect swelling, bruising, and tightness in the first week – the sensation of snugness is normal and reflects the newly tailored skin envelope. Arms are typically kept elevated early on to help control swelling, and ice may be applied as directed.
Most patients manage discomfort with prescribed medication for a few days, transitioning to over-the-counter options as they feel able. Desk-based work is often resumed within one to two weeks. Lifting, pushing, pulling, and upper-body exercise are restricted longer to protect the healing incisions.
  • Keep your arms elevated as much as possible to reduce swelling.
  • Wear your compression garment exactly as instructed – it supports the new contours and helps control swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for several weeks.
  • Keep incisions clean and dry, and follow the wound care instructions given at discharge. Avoid rubbing alcohol on healing areas; it is too harsh.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments so Dr. LaBarbera can monitor your healing.
  • Return to activity gradually. Start slow, build up over time, and listen to your body.
  • Begin scar care at four weeks post-op. Silicone gel sheeting and Biocorneum are recommended, and we provide a scar massage handout.
  • Send photos if something concerns you. Text (480) 770-4455 or email [email protected] – messages receive a response by the next business day.
  • Call us if anything changes, worsens, or simply feels different. We would always rather hear from you.

Expected Arm Lift Results

Initial improvement is visible immediately, though swelling obscures the final contour for several weeks. As swelling resolves over the following months, the arm’s definition emerges – a firmer, slimmer, smoother line from shoulder to elbow.
Scars are red or pink at first and soften, flatten, and lighten progressively over the course of a year. Results are durable: the skin that was removed will not return. Maintaining a stable weight and consistent activity level is the best way to preserve your outcome – and patients often describe a renewed sense of confidence and comfort in their appearance.

Complementary Procedures at Our
Mesa Office

Many patients addressing post-weight-loss or post-pregnancy changes choose to combine procedures. Combining surgeries can also reduce total facility and anesthesia costs.
Dr. LaBarbera determines during your consultation whether multiple procedures can safely be performed in one session based on your health, anatomy, and total operative time.

Who Is a Candidate

You may be a strong candidate for an arm lift if you:
Dr. LaBarbera maintains a BMI limit of 50 for surgical procedures, and your height and weight will be reviewed before a consultation is scheduled so we can confirm candidacy early. Patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you are taking a GLP-1 medication, please tell our team. Semaglutide must be stopped two weeks before surgery; Mounjaro ten days prior. These medications may typically be resumed two weeks after your procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my arm lift scars be visible?
Yes – brachioplasty exchanges loose skin for a scar. Dr. LaBarbera places incisions as discreetly as possible, typically along the inner or back arm where they are least noticeable at rest. Scars are permanent but fade considerably over the first year, and we provide silicone gel sheeting recommendations and a scar massage handout to support healing.
Most patients return to light, non-strenuous activity within 1–2 weeks. Full recovery, including all normal activities and exercise, typically takes 4–6 weeks. Individual recovery times vary.
Ease back in gradually. Light walking begins early, while upper-body training and lifting are restricted for several weeks. Dr. LaBarbera will give you activity clearances specific to your recovery – start slow, work your way up, and listen to your body.
An arm lift primarily removes excess skin. Some fat may be removed with liposuction to enhance the contour, but it is not a weight-loss surgery. It’s suited to patients at or near a stable weight who have significant skin laxity.
Only if your skin has enough elasticity to retract. If skin laxity is the primary issue, liposuction alone can leave the arm looking looser. Dr. LaBarbera will assess your skin quality and give you a straightforward recommendation.
Yes. Both in-person and virtual consultations are available. For a virtual visit, photos must be submitted in advance – Dr. LaBarbera initiates the call, so plan to be somewhere quiet and private.
Surgery is usually scheduled 4–6 weeks after your consultation. Dr. LaBarbera’s standard surgery days are Tuesdays and Fridays, and a 10% deposit secures your date.
