The first week after a mini tummy tuck involves managing pain and discomfort. Patients need to rest and limit physical activity during this time. Swelling and bruising around the incision site are common. Drainage tubes may still be in place to prevent fluid build-up. Patients should walk bent at the hips to avoid tension on the incision. Medications are used to control pain.
Patients can usually return to light activities during the second week. Swelling and bruising continue to go down. Drainage tubes are removed at this point. Discomfort decreases, but patients may still require pain medication. The abdomen might also feel slightly tight due to swelling and healing tissues. Patients must avoid lifting, bending, and other movements that strain the incision.
In the third week, patients transition off pain medication. Swelling continues to subside, and discomfort further decreases. Patients may still experience some numbness around the incision site. More physical activities can be resumed, like climbing stairs, but vigorous exercise is still restricted. The incision should be closely monitored for proper healing.
All symptoms disappear over the next few weeks except for mild residual swelling. Patients can resume most normal activities, including driving and active walking. Exercise may be gradually resumed after the 6-week mark. The incision will continue maturing for up to one year. Patients usually see their final mini tummy tuck results after 3-6 months of recovery.
Gently wash the target zone with mild soap and water, and be sure to pat dry. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the incision.
(if Dr. LaBarbera recommends). Silicone or hydrocortisone products can help reduce scar redness and thickness. Massage the cream or ointment gently into the scarring and surrounding area.
These may help flatten and fade scars.
UV exposure may darken scars and interfere with the healing process. Use an SPF 30+ sunscreen.
It can take a year or more for scars to mature and fade to their permanent color.
Use gentle, circular motions along the length of the scar a few times per day. Dr. LaBarbera will explain how and when this should be done.
Tight clothes might irritate and reopen healing tissue. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics.
This can disturb the healing incision. Instead, soak the area in a warm bath or use a damp washcloth to loosen and remove crusting.
A partial abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen. Women with stretch marks and other cosmetic issues after pregnancy or significant weight loss often find that this procedure helps flatten and tone their figures.
A mini tummy tuck is less invasive than a full abdominoplasty. Dr. LaBarbera makes a shorter incision and focuses on tightening only the lower abdomen below the belly button. Due to less trauma to the tissues, this procedure allows for a quicker recovery time compared to a traditional or extended tummy tuck surgery.
Since a shorter incision is made during a mini tummy tuck, the scarring left behind is smaller. Most underwear and swimsuits easily hide the mini tummy tuck scar, which typically fades and smooths over time.
The less invasive nature of this procedure means that patients can expect a shorter recovery. While they still need to limit activity for several weeks, most individuals return to non-strenuous work within 7-14 days. There is typically less pain and discomfort during the healing process.
